Supporting diversity isn’t just a moral obligation on the 8 of March — it’s an everyday strategy for economic and technological growth. Parents need to change their mindset and encourage their daughters to play sports. Otherwise, myths will continue to exist, and playing sports will remain an unfulfilled dream for many girls in our country. In 2002, mutual fund giant, Oppenheimer conducted a study to understand how women who played sports performed as entrepreneurs.

Global data suggests women aren’t being active in other ways to counteract their lower sport participation. Women have disconcertingly high rates of mental and behavioural conditions. Young women in particular (15-24 years) suffer from conditions such as depression at a higher rate than the general population (30 per cent compared to 20.1 per cent respectively). The number of women living with a mental or behavioural condition is increasing. One avenue to improve mental health wellbeing is through being active.

For Christmas and birthdays, we must find books about girls in sports, give gifts of sports equipment and sports lessons. It’s no accident that girls’ sports participation in Olympic sports increases significantly following the Olympic Games, one of the few times that coverage of women’s sports is equal to that of men’s sports. This top to bottom synergy has not yet become commonplace in women’s sports because of limited college and professional sports opportunities and television coverage. While most countries have initiatives for promoting physical activity and sport to try to improve health, it is repeatedly reported that females are less involved with sports and physical activity compared to males. Schools are an important place for nurturing the healthy development of children.
